Day 63 - Cape Disappointment

Every adventure that crosses the Columbia starts here at the Bridgewater Bistro.

We have crossed the Columbia - and en route to Cape Disappointment State Park on the Washington side.

Crazy roots and a forest full of ferns. Nature never fails to disappoint!

This sentient Shelf Fungus colony has been working on their kaleidoscopic communications device for centuries. They are almost ready. They plan to show the Super Bowl on this device. Come back in February. Who knew? Plant-Based TV!

Deadman's Cove looks quite serene today - but imagining a storm surge would out one in quite a spot of bother.

Fellow hikers are braving the slick trail down to Deadman's.

Wendy and Ella contemplate the meaning of "Deadman's".

We quickly ascend from the cove - the trail is steep - but entirely paved as it's also an access point to the light from the coast guard station.

A remnant of an old outpost is being reclaimed by the forest.

Little waves wash hopefully up on Deadman's Beach. Come on in!! The water's fine!!

They are deadly serious about this one.

We're no longer in Oregon. This lighthouse at the Columbia North Jetty is a beaut.

The north Jetty - where the Columbia meets the Pacific. Navigating these jetties can be treacherous.

The lighthouse pushes back against the weather, still on station doing its job.

This old light has not been painted in quite some time - however the weathered patina is truly gorgeous.

They're even more deadly serious about this one - no messing with these R and R's.

The Coast Guard Station at the Cape is nestled into this scenic little cove - just don't dare try to visit!

The "other" bridge at Astoria leads to the wee town of Hammond.
